Understanding Bias

Code: EE-FI-02

Half-day – 3hrs (1 x break)

Either on-site or virtual

Course Overview

Bias is a natural part of human thinking and often operates unconsciously, influencing how we perceive people, situations, and decisions. In workplace settings, particularly in engineering and technical environments where decisions around recruitment, teamwork, and career development are critical, bias can shape outcomes in ways individuals may not realise. This course explores how bias develops, the different forms it can take, and how it can affect everyday decision-making. Participants will build self-awareness of their own unconscious biases and explore practical strategies to recognise and manage bias in order to support fairer and more objective workplace practices.

What you’ll learn

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the concept of unconscious bias and how it develops as part of natural human decision-making.
  • Explain different types of bias and how they can influence perceptions and judgements in the workplace.
  • Identify situations where bias may occur in day-to-day professional contexts, such as recruitment, team interactions, and career progression.
  • Analyse how unconscious bias can affect workplace decisions, behaviours, and organisational culture.
  • Evaluate strategies individuals can use to recognise and manage bias in order to support more objective and inclusive decision-making.”
