Inclusive Engineering in Design

Code: EE-EF-11

Half-day – 3hrs (1 x break)

Either on-site or virtual

Course Overview

Engineering design decisions shape how people interact with technology, infrastructure, and engineered systems. When diverse perspectives are not considered during the design process, unintended consequences can arise that exclude or disadvantage certain groups of users. This course introduces the principles of inclusive engineering design and explores how engineers can incorporate diverse user needs into the design process. Participants will examine how bias can emerge in design decisions and how inclusive approaches can improve safety, usability, and performance. Through practical examples and case studies, the course provides tools and frameworks to help engineers integrate inclusive thinking into design reviews, project development, and decision-making processes.

What you’ll learn

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the concept of inclusive engineering design and its relevance to engineering practice.
  • Explain how design decisions can unintentionally create barriers for different users.
  • Identify potential sources of bias or exclusion within engineering design processes.
  • Analyse how incorporating diverse user perspectives can improve engineering outcomes.
  • Apply inclusive design principles to support safer, more effective engineering solutions.
