Course Overview

Work experience programmes provide valuable opportunities for students to explore engineering careers and gain insight into professional workplaces. However, the success of these placements depends heavily on the managers and supervisors responsible for supporting students during their time with an organisation. This course prepares managers to deliver meaningful, structured, and engaging work experience placements. Participants will learn how to design activities that support learning, communicate effectively with young people who may have limited workplace experience, and create positive placement experiences that benefit both students and the organisation.

What you’ll learn

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the objectives and value of work experience programmes within engineering organisations.
  • Explain how structured placements support student learning and engagement.
  • Identify strategies for planning meaningful activities and learning opportunities during placements.
  • Analyse approaches for communicating effectively with students and supporting their confidence in professional environments.
